Grant Green's solo on "Blues for Willarene"

This is a great example of how to combine solid bebop and blues foundations to create a great, soulful solo. In the first chorus, Green gives a prime example of melodic development: Statement of motive, repetition, then a variation in form of some bebop scale and chromatic resolution phrases.

Any of these phrases could be taken and practiced in all keys and/or positions/register to make a good addition to one's vocabulary. In bar 7, he continues with a pick-up into a classic II-V-I line characterized again by the the use bebop scale. The solo continues in this fashion: From Blues scale based ideas to the resolution with mostly classic bebop lines. Also, notice how he takes ideas from the rhythm section, and vica versa, creating a dialog throughout the whole piece.

It would be a good idea to get the CD (Grant Green - Grant's First Stand) and learn the rest, or a couple more chorusses, on your own...there's some great lines in it. Well, here it is:
